Why make the effort to eat seasonable produce when you can get any veg all year around? So much joy can be found by consuming the best fresh food available, and one of the simplest ways to do this is to eat food that is in season. Here are just 5 great reasons why:

1. Food is cheaper

It is cheaper to buy food in season because you don’t have to add in all the additional costs of growing out of season and long-haul transportation. Who doesn’t love an easy saving?!

2. Fresher, more nutritious and our veg are really clever!

Seasonable food is usually fresher as it has a shorter time between harvesting and being on your plate. Seasonable foods are clever too because they provide the nutrients and minerals that our bodies need at different times of year. Grade A marks for seasonable produce!

3. Food has travelled less miles and consumes less energy

Less energy is needed to grow and transport food due to the localised nature of the growing season.

4. Increased diversity

By eating seasonally, you can very quickly create diversity in your diet with very little extra effort. We know diversity of our food is important for our overall health. A simple but effective hack.

5. Support your local economy

This is an easy one, and naturally close to Trove’s heart! It’s far better for your local community to buy food that is grown near to home than having flown thousands of miles. Food is a necessity spend so direct your spending within your local community rather than to an HQ many miles away!

5 reasons to shop locally for food

Month: February 2022

1. Retaining money in your local community

This is a big motivation behind Trove. We are so passionate about retaining more consumer spending within local communities. We enable independent businesses to thrive and encourage new ones to open knowing they can access a network of customers. This will create more local employment to the benefit of the whole community.

2. Higher quality and better tasting food

We aim to promote fresh locally produced food. This tends to have been recently picked therefore fresher and better tasting. At Trove we know consumers demand variety which means some items will be grown abroad out of UK season. However, we aim to promote season eating and the “best of British” at different times of year.

3. Better nutrition

What’s not to love about getting more nutritional bang for your buck by just simply swapping to shopping locally?! Eating locally produced food is a very simple way to improve your overall nutritional intake. As soon as fruit and veg are picked their nutrients start to degrade. Buying locally and fresh should mean better nutrition for you.

4. Unique products

We support any business involved with local food – be it a producer, supplier, or retailer. We have found so many brilliant local businesses creating unique product that really is impossible to find anywhere else! From honey direct from local hives to curry sauces and chutneys to kombucha – we are uncovering new products all the time.

5. Shorter food miles

When we source local food, we can get it direct from the farm to the table in a much quicker time. This saves transportation and energy costs for both supplier and consumer. Supermarket “fresh food” may have travelled miles and been subject to far more handling, storage, and packaging.

How Trove helps consumers to shop locally

Month: February 2022

We have certainly heard, and seen in the stats, that people desire to shop locally and support their community.  However, we know this is not always easy – or certainly not perceived to be easy.  So, here are a few key barriers and how Trove can help:

Parking dilemmas resolved with Trove

A key barrier to shopping locally can be down to something as simple as accessible parking! People feel either frustrated trying to find a free parking space or having to pay expensive car parking fees.  By shopping locally with Trove you will cut of this issue as we can delivery direct to your door for a price often less than the cost of parking plus the petrol to drive there.

“It’s too expensive” – not when you shop for what you really need…

There can be a misconception that shopping locally costs a lot more than a supermarket shop. Not so! Many local retailers will run product discounts and promotions, particularly when in season, which means you can buy items you want rather than just being tempted by multi-buy offers from the supermarket. These “offers” can make it easy to waste money on products shoppers end up not actually needing or liking. More likely than not adding to the mountain of food waste consumers already produce. Shop for what you really need, and our guess is you can source pretty much all of it close to your doorstep.

Limited range – we most certainly beg to differ!

In this point we certainly beg to differ! On Trove you can pretty much complete a “full basket shop” meaning you can access most ingredients needed for a wholesome meal. We have 1,000 stock items and 50 different cheese varieties alone! The advantage of shopping online through Trove is the ability to see all off the products on offer locally at your convenience online without the concern of going to the shop only to find the items you want are not in stock.

It is our aim to keep the connection to local stores by providing an engaging online presence for retailers to reach more customers. If by using Trove for your regularly weekly it also encourages more loyalty to drop by those retailers in person when you can, we will be very happy indeed!
